exception caught: DB: exactMatch: 2006: MySQL server has gone away [SOLVED]

Hopefully this helps someone else out there. On CentOS 5.3, using a downloaded version from subversion, it appeared to compile and install ok, but when running it, /var/log/maillog was filling up with the following error message:

Sep 7 05:04:15 box123 gps[5138]: exception caught: DB: exactMatch: 2006: MySQL server has gone away network, continuing with 'dunno'

However, after installing the old version (gps-1.005) it appears to be working fine.

Here's the compile that gave no errors on compile but did not result in a functional version of gps:

--------------------------------
svn co https://greylist.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/greylist/trunk greylist
cd greylist
make -f Makefile.cvs
./configure
make
make install
--------------------------------

And here's what I did to compile the old version, which both compiled with errors *and* which provided a functional version of gps:

--------------------------------
wget http://downloads.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/greylist/gps-1.005.tar.gz?u...
tar xzvf gps-1.005.tar.gz
cd gps-1.005
automake -a
make -f Makefile.cvs
./configure
make
make install
--------------------------------

Now, the only question I have is this... What am I missing by not going with the Subversion version?
